One such artist is John V., whose work not only embodies his creative spirit but also the profound emotions and hard-earned healing he has infused into every piece.
John proudly hails from Boyle Heights, with roots tracing back to Mexico, where his large family—comprising six brothers and two sisters—originates. Growing up in such a vibrant household instilled in him a deep appreciation for connection and compassion, values that later guided him in his fulfilling role as a caregiver for seniors.
John became part of Piece by Piece in June 2022, initially invited by a friend. What began as a casual visit quickly transformed into a meaningful journey—a place where he could explore his creativity, challenge himself, and find a sense of belonging. Although initially daunted by mosaic work, John gradually discovered not only confidence in his abilities but also joy in the process. “I’m very proud that I can do mosaic projects now,” he shares. “It’s shown me I can do anything I put my mind to.”
At Piece by Piece, John has found a family and a community that uplifts and inspires him every day. He often expresses how the program has opened him up to new experiences and revealed new possibilities. “My classmates inspire me all the time,” he says. “Just being here reminds me that I’m not alone—and that I belong.”
