Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming artist Mark Asofsky from Florida for a truly special workshop at Piece by Piece. Accompanied by his family, Mark shared his distinctive craft of Soda Can Art with our participant artists, resulting in a day filled with creativity, learning, and meaningful connections.
Mark introduced the group to his innovative process of transforming everyday recycled soda cans into vibrant, colorful works of art. He demonstrated how he meticulously cuts and flattens the cans using a heat press, then shapes them into squares or unique forms with hole punchers. Each piece is sorted by color and can type, creating a stunning palette of materials ready to inspire.
Thanks to Mark’s thoughtful preparation—bringing thousands of prepped can pieces—the artists were able to immediately immerse themselves in creating their own masterpieces. Using glue to attach the colorful metal pieces to their canvases, each participant infused their personal style and flair. Mark expressed his joy in observing the diverse approaches the artists took and even learned new techniques by witnessing their creativity in action.
This special workshop perfectly aligned with Piece by Piece’s values of reducing waste and promoting sustainability. By utilizing recycled materials, the artists not only crafted stunning works of art but also embraced the important practice of giving new life to discarded items—one piece at a time.
Participant, Margarita, thanked Piece by Piece founder, Sophie Alpert, for bringing Mark to Piece by Piece for this unique experience. It was a heartwarming moment that truly captured the spirit of our community.
We’re especially proud to highlight that Mark’s connection to Piece by Piece runs deep—his nephew, Ethan Asofsky, serves on our Board of Directors, furthering our mission of empowering individuals through art and opportunity.
A heartfelt thank you to Mark and his family for traveling to Los Angeles to teach and inspire! We are deeply grateful for artists who share not only their skills but their passion with our community. Stay tuned—you might just see some of these beautiful soda can creations featured in upcoming exhibits and projects!
