Broken Pieces, New Beginnings

When disaster strikes, the precious reminders of our lives. the dishes handed down through generations, the family number once displayed proudly at the door, the kitchen tiles echoing with laughter, can be the hardest losses to bear. Following the Palisades and Eaton Fires, countless families lost both their homes and these cherished pieces of their stories.

At Piece by Piece, we believe healing is found not in letting go, but in reimagining how we carry our memories forward. That’s the heart behind Broken Pieces, New Beginnings, a program designed to help fire survivors transform fragments of their past into meaningful mosaic art.

The journey starts with a simple form. Survivors share photos of the keepsakes they’ve held onto, broken china, keys, plates, tiles. Our artists then partner with each participant, crafting a mosaic that honors what was lost and celebrates the strength to begin again.

For some, these mosaics become deeply personal investments in healing. For others, generous grants from Fired and other supporters ensure access for all—removing any financial barrier to remembering and rebuilding.

Fire survivors have shared the profound impact of Broken Pieces, New Beginnings:

“From the very beginning, everything was handled with great thought, care and compassion, which was invaluable to me at this difficult time. I was very impressed with—and tremendously grateful for, the generosity and kindness offered by this organization. Having lost our three-generation family home in the Palisades, this gift was an invaluable and meaningful lift to me at this tragic time. I am deeply grateful.” – A.B.

“I lost my home in the Palisades fire and Piece by Piece took my broken pieces and turned them into something beautiful at no cost to me. I will be forever grateful for what they did for me.” – J.F.

Every mosaic is handcrafted by Piece by Piece artists—individuals who have overcome homelessness, economic insecurity, and other personal challenges. Through their artistry, they support themselves and give back to the community, creating wall hangings, frames, trays, table tops, stepping stones, and more, each one a symbol of hope and renewal.

For our artists, this work is far more than a job. It’s an honor, a chance to walk alongside neighbors, transforming fragments of tragedy into testaments to resilience and beauty.
